Endodontists are dentists with special training in endodontic procedures. They perform only endodontic services because they are considered specialists. Upon completion of dental school, they attend two or more additional years of advanced training in endodontics. Endodontists are very experienced at finding the cause of oral and facial pain that has been difficult to diagnose.
Endodontics relates to the treatment of the ‘inside’ of the tooth. It is a form of specialized dentistry that deals with disease of the pulp and its structure. The pulp which contains blood vessels and nerves, can become damaged which leads to pain, sensitivity to cold and heat and swelling or tenderness near the gum line. The endodontist will remove the inflamed or infected pulp, carefully clean the inside of the tooth, then fill and seal the canal. However, if the tooth lacks sufficient structure to hold the restoration in place, the endodontists will place a post inside the tooth. Your dentist will then place a crown or other restoration on the tooth to protect and restore it to its full function.
Most endodontically ‘restored’ teeth last as long as other natural teeth. In some instances, a tooth that has had root canal treatment fails to heal or the pain continues. It is important that you contact us immediately so we can do everything to not only alleviate your pain, but also save the tooth.
